What Happens When Your Virginity Is Taken From You

I don’t love the title but this is a good article and it’s nice to hear from someone else who is as uneasy with this question/topic as I am and has also felt shamed when answering it.

"When you grow up as a girl, the world tells you the things that you are supposed to be: emotional, loving, beautiful, wanted. And then when you are those things, the world tells you they are inferior: illogical, weak, vain, empty."

slayboybunny:

the whole phrasing of “slut shaming” really skeeves me out cuz u dont get to call a girl a slutty cuz u feel like shes slutty, ya know?? its just another form of policing. sure she can call herself that. you can call yourself slutty too. but maybe to her she doesnt view her sexual agency as slutty!! maybe she doesnt view her body or outfit as slutty!! maybe shes uncomfortable by such a violent word!! u dont know this stuff so u cant apply it to her even if u mean well when u talk about it.

"We all know about the sexual desire of adolescent boys. But scenes of young women’s sexual awakening in themselves do not exist except in a mock-up for the male voyeur. It is hard to imagine, in a cultural vacuum, what solitary female desire looks like. Women’s bodies are portrayed as attractive packaging around an empty box; our genitals are not eroticized for women. men’s bodies are not eroticized for women. Other women’s bodies are not eroticized for women. Female masturbation is not eroticized for women. Each woman has to learn for herself, from nowhere, how to feel sexual (thought she learns constantly how to look sexual). She is given no counterculture of female lust looking outward, no descriptions of the intricate, curious presence of her genital sensations of the way they continually enrich her body’s knowledge. Left to herself in the dark she has very little choice: She must absorb the dominant culture’s fantasies as her own."

"Except you can’t show a topless woman on TV - and you can’t defibrillate a woman in a bra. So victims of heart attacks on TV are *always* male. Did you know that a woman having a heart attack is more likely to have back or jaw pain than chest or left arm pain? I didn’t - because I’ve never seen a woman having a heart attack. I’ve been trained in CPR and Advanced First Aid by the Red Cross over 15 times in my life, the videos and booklets always have a guy and say the same thing about clutching his chest and/or bicep.

And people laugh when I tell them women are still invisible in this world."

This is a post that might save a life.

My mom worked for 25 years as an ER nurse and is convinced that a lot of women die simply because folks only know heart attack symptoms that occur in males.
